HISTORY OF KIRRA-TUGUN PROBUS CLUB
Probus began as an initiative of the U.K. Rotary Clubs of Welwyn City and of Caterham in the interval 1965-66; the name Probus being derived from ‘ Professional’ and ‘Business’.
The Probus Club of Kirra-Tugun [Mixed], was established at an inaugural meeting held on Monday 19th August 1991.
The Kirra – Currumbin Rotary Club’s President, Des Spitall began the meeting, introducing Jim Trethowan to assist with proceedings.
The Club’s constitution was explained by Rotarian Don Fraser.
The Club committee was then chosen, with Howard Reid being elected as our first President, with his wife Audrey, as Secretary.
On 13th August 2001, under the leadership of President Roy MacArthur and Secretary Pauline Cassels, our Probus club became incorporated.
Unlike Rotary, our club is non-fundraising. It is not for profit; its affairs are audited; it has obligatory registration with the Qld. Office of Fair Trading, and has a formal constitution regulated by a parent, supervisory board known as Probus South Pacific Ltd.
Reflecting Rotarian origins, club meetings incorporate a business-like structure; this now becoming less formal with the passage of time.
Now in 2018, its 28th year, the club attempts to respond to the aspirations of our current membership of active, retired men and women; and to anticipate those yet to come.
